Rocky Mountain Regional Conference 2018 Information

South Dakota School of Mines is hosting the 2018 Rocky Mountain Regional Conference! The conference takes place April 5-7 in and around Rapid City, SD. Below is a day-by-day breakdown of the weekend along with links to pages for each of the individual competitions. We will do our best to keep these pages updated as information becomes available. Mailer 1 can be downloaded from the link above. Some important notes from this mailer include the following:

  • School registration deadline is November 30, 2017
  • Attendee Pre-reigstration is due February 1, 2018
  • Hotel Resrvation Cut-off is March 1, 2018
  • Attendee fee is $70.00 per person

  Two hotels will be available through our chapter for you to book rooms from. For both, mentioning that you are with the “ASCE Regional Competition” should be adequate in getting you the proper rate.

Day 1: April 5th, 2018​​

Registration/Opening Day Activites

​Team registration will take place from 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. inside the King Center on the SD School of Mines campus. A welcome dinner will be served with brief presentations from each chaper from 6:00-8:00. The Mystery Design activity will take place from 8:00-8:30, with the Steel Bridge Captains' Meeting to follow immediately after. Below is a map of campus, with the King Center (building 6) circled in red.

Overnight Trailer Parking (for Day 1):

Secured overnight parking is available for trailers on the side of the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Currently this will only be available for the night of April 5th. On the morning of April 6th, bridges and canoes can be unloaded and taken into the civic center through a loading door near this parking lot. 

Day 2: April 6th, 2018​​

Bridge and Canoe Display Portion

Bridge and Canoe display portion will take place concurrently on the morning of April 6th from 8:30 A.M. -1100 A.M. Bridges and canoes can be unloaded at 8:00  and taken through a loading bay in the Barnett Arena and into Rushmore Hall where the judging will take place. Pre-design Competition

The Pre-Design competition wil take place from 9:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M., with the exact location and competition specifics still to be determined.

Concrete Canoe Presentations

Concrete canoe paper presentation will take place from 10:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M., with the exact location to be determined.

Steel Bridge Competition

The Steel Bridge Competition will take place from 11:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. in the Barnett Arena, with the first team beginning immediately after asthetics judging is complete. Further information on the Steel Bridge portion of the competition can be found by following the link below:

Technical and Nontechnical Paper Competions

The Technical and Nontechnical Paper presentations will take place from 11:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. in the Ponderosa and Alpine rooms on the second  floor of the Civic Center. Below is a floorplan of the second level with the Ponderosa and Alpine rooms circled in red.

Other Day 2 Activities

The Concrete Canoe captains' meeting will take place from 2:00 P.M. - 3:00 P.M., with the location to be determined. The mandatory business meeting will occur from 5:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M., with the location to be determined.

Day 3: April 7th, 2018​​

Concrete Canoe Competion

The concrete canoe competition will take place on Saturday at Angostura Reservoir near Hot Springs, SD. This is approximately a 1 hour drive from Rapid City. Canoe drop off will be at 7:30 A.M. Here is a link to directions from the Howard Johnson Hotel to to the reservoir.

Awards Banquet

The Awards Banquet will take place Saturday night from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. after the concrete canoe competition. At present, the banquet is scheduled to be held at the Holiday Inn.
