ABOUT US

The goal of the South Dakota School of Mines ASCE Student Chapter is to enhance the personal and professional development of students.  ASCE strives to promote the development of leadership skills, team building, and commitment to excellence in students' personal and professional lives.

WHAT WE DO

We are proud to be one of SDSM&T's oldest and most active student organizations.  Check out the type of activities we offer, and to see what we have been up to, check out our annual newsletter, and stay current with our Facebook page.

GUEST SPEAKERS

We invite guest speakers to speak at our general meetings to discuss a range of topics related to civil engineering, such as engineering projects, ethics, and new research.

SITE VISITS

We arrange for members to visit civil engineering projects and as well as companies.  Past trips have included visits to the McCook Tunnel project (Chicago, IL) Placer Hall site tour (Rapid City, SD); Kolberg-Pioneer Inc. (Yankton, SD); Oahe Dam (Pierre, SD); and Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (Carlsbad, NM).

STUDENT OUTREACH

We present to potential students both at Go to Mines events on campus, and at schools in the surrounding communities to demonstrate some of the things we do, and to get students interested in engineering.

SOCIAL EVENTS

We host a number of social events throughout the year, ranging from a start of the year picnic, playing broomball, a holiday banquet, and even movie nights.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

We do a number of community service projects each year. Each year, we do a highway cleanup as part of Adopt-a-Highway.  Other projects include building a stream table to showcase erosion to middle school students, and rebuilding a Willie the Whale at Storybook Island.See our Special Projects  page for more up to date information.

CONFERENCES

We offer numerous opportunities to attend conferences and meet fellow engineering students, ASCE officials, and industry leaders from across the country.  Every year, we send members to the ASCE Rocky Mountain Regional Conference to present papers and to compete in the Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge competitions.  We also send students to the Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders (WSCL), and the National ASCE Conference to become better leaders and to learn from experts.  We also help run the Annual Concrete Conference that takes place at the School of Mines.
